How the index works

• Each month we take the used cars newly listed on the Gulf marketplaces we track, at the first asking price each one was listed with. Every car counts once, and a car counts as newly listed only when we saw it within a few days of its listing date, so an old advert seen for the first time is never taken for a new one.
• Cars are compared like for like: only with cars from the same marketplace, make, model, model year and trim in the other month. A change in what happens to be for sale does not read as a change in price.
• Prices are adjusted for mileage, and for the extra month of age the later cars have, so a car simply growing older is not counted as a price change.
• A mistyped price barely moves the figure.
• The 90% range shows how much the change could differ with the particular cars we counted. A narrow range means a firmer figure, and a range that includes zero means no change cannot be ruled out.
• Each month is calculated once, after it ends, and then frozen. A published figure changes only if the method changes, and we would announce that.
• The index starts at 100 in July 2026. Each later month's level is the previous month's level moved by that month's change.
• The same-model-years figure leaves out the allowance for the extra month of age, so it shows how the asking price of the same model years actually moved.
• These are asking prices from advertisements, not the prices cars sold for. The series is not adjusted for the time of year.
